Education
There is a growing trend in colleges and universities in Canada to require students to conduct a criminal record screening prior to enrollment or graduation. Policies vary between colleges and universities, so if you are planning on enrolling in a specific university or college, we recommend contacting their administrations office for details of requirements.
Generally, you may face a criminal record screening if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Registered students in a university or college with a practicum component involving work with children and the successful completion of which is a requirement for registration as a member in their chosen profession.
- Teacher Education students intending to work as school teachers often must undergo a criminal record check prior to certification
- Students of criminology, criminal Justice, corrections, policing and social work are sometimes required to obtain a criminal record check
- Students of educational program related to bookkeeping or accounting
- Students of professional programs such as dentistry, medicine, nursing and law.
- Practicum students, who will be working in a field of employment which requires security screenings.
- Students of international studies/student exchange programs which require them to complete credits in colleges and universities in the United States and overseas will want to clear their criminal record before they are required to travel.
