FAQ: How does the Pardon Work

When you receive a Canadian pardon through Express Pardons, your criminal record is completely wiped from all of the searchable systems in Canada, including the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC).

All physical hard copy (paper) information is removed from CPIC and shelved in the Federal RCMP Pardon Unit’s office, keeping them separate from other records. The National Parole Board also notifies any federal department or agency that is in possession of the criminal record(s) to seal and separate them from other records.

The Pardon Unit then advises the relevant local police service of the pardoned record. That police service then has 90 days to seal their local records and destroy any electronic records. Court records of your trial(s), while not physically destroyed, are placed in court archives under seal. Under these circumstances, only you can access these records.
