Omnibus Crime Bill Passes in the House of Commons

Yesterday, the Omnibus Crime Bill Passed in the House of Commons.  With a vote of 157 to 127 in favor of the bill, the Omnibus Crime Bill, also known as Bill C-10 is one step closer to becoming law in Canada. Pardon Legislation Changes in Bill C 10

The following changes will be made to the Canadian pardon system once Bill C 10 is passed into law:

  • Pardons will become Record Suspensions
  • Eligibility wait time for a Record Suspension for a summary offence will increase from 3 years to 5 years
  • Eligibility wait time for a Record Suspension for an indictable offence will increase from 5 years to 10 years
  • Those individuals convicted of 4 or more indictable offenses will no longer be eligible for a Record Suspension
  • Those individuals convicted of a Schedule 1 offence will no longer be eligible for a Record Suspension
