FAQ: What is a Conditional or Absolute Discharge

A discharge occurs when a judge determines that you are guilty of an offence but provided you follow the conditions set out for you, your conviction will not result in a criminal record. For discharges granted after July 1992, the record will automatically be removed after a certain amount of time. A conditional discharge record will be removed 3 years after the charge occurred, provided that the conditions were met. An absolute discharge will be removed after 1 year. Any conditional or absolute discharges prior to July 1992 will remain in the system until you apply for a purge.
